We moved into a builder grade home, which has been so much fun to take a blank slate and make it what we like. Sometimes the smallest rooms feel the “easiest”….so that’s why I decided to tackle the half bath.
Here is what we were working with. Not a whole lot.

It is hard to tell from the photo, but here in Colorado we have orange peel wall texture. I don’t have an angry bone in my body…but our wall texture drives me nuts. I went back and forth on ideas for about 6 months and decided that covering up the orangepeel was a must.
so….at first I thought I’d put paneling up. I bought the wrong kind and it didn’t look great. So I decided to bite the bullet and just do it the long way by covering the walls with joint compound and sanding them smooth.

57 years later it was ready for some paneling. I made the mistake of cutting all the vertical pieces to the height I wanted vs doing the horizontal piece first level on the wall and then measuring the vertical boards. I ended up with some larger gaps that I had to caulk & wood fill. Next time…horizontal board first & then fill in with the vertical below.

I was covered in drywall dust for the month it took me to do this project. I decided I wanted to go dark. We have tall ceilings and lots of light in this room so I was comfortable going moody. I was thinking of doing a wall paper above the paneling but I used portola paints before for a roman clay project and loved it so I decided I’d do it again in here. However, that meant I’d need to smooth the entire wall (not just the bottom) and the ceiling.

Painted the lower half “fade to black” satin paint and then did the upper half and ceiling in the “fade to black” roman clay.

If you are still reading, I hope this was helpful! I really enjoyed the process of redoing this bathroom. I listened to many audio books late into the night in this bathroom & really enjoyed the quiet time smoothing the walls. Hope this inspires you to go bold & roman clay your walls!
