Step-by-Step: From Drab to Dramatic Living Room Makeover

Transforming Our Blank Slate into a Cozy, Moody Living Room

When we first walked into our front room, it was a stark, all-white space—an empty canvas that once served as a formal dining room. However, we knew we’d never use it that way. Instead, I envisioned a peaceful retreat, free from scattered kids’ toys, where I could enjoy my coffee (or a glass of wine) and lose myself in a good book.

While I was away one weekend, my amazing husband took on the project of turning our uninspiring front room into a cozy reading haven. I can’t recommend this enough!

Step 1: A Fresh Coat of Paint
He started by painting the walls, ceiling, and trim in a rich, moody color. This choice envelops the space, making it feel like a warm embrace. With plenty of natural light pouring in through the windows and our tall ceilings, the room feels both open and inviting—perfect for relaxation.

Step 2: Tackling the Texture
Now, let’s talk about the walls. We have that dreaded orange peel texture, which I know I’ve complained about before! It just doesn’t look great, especially with the paneling above. To create our accent wall, my husband installed drywall, giving us a smooth surface that elevates the overall look and feel of the room.

Step 3: Installing the Paneling. Next came the actual paneling. He carefully nailed in MDF boards over the drywall seams, creating a seamless and polished look. To finish, he caulked all the edges and filled any holes with wood putty, ensuring everything looked clean and cohesive.

No joke….the day he finished this an “art” sales person came to our door and had sold us these paintings out of her car. Seems super sketch, but the timing was perfect.

It is now one of my favorite rooms in our home & made one of the biggest transformations. If you are on the fence about going “dark”…jump on in! It is just paint ;).

With Love, Chloe
